A limestone sinkhole containing water. Cenotes are the only natural water source in the northern part of the Yucatán peninsula, which lacks streams and lakes. The ancient Maya strongly associated the cenotes with the rain-god, Chac, on whom they relied for water in the cenotes and the cisterns that they built to catch runoff.
